Blackboard Collaborate is a real-time video conferencing tool that lets you add files, share applications, and use a virtual whiteboard to interact. Collaborate opens right in your browser, so you don't have to install any software to join a session.
Sessions can be recorded including the text chat. If you want to be anonymous please speak to your tutor.
Blackboard Collaborate only works on the following browsers.
Recommended using Google Chrome and Firefox
Please ensure you are running the latest version of these browsers. Using another type of browser will result in issues with video and audio.

Collaborate is available on a mobile device either using a browser (please follow the above advice) or via the Collaborate app. The app is available to download in the Android and IOS store. For more information about the app please visit https://help.blackboard.com/Blackboard_App/Collaborate
You can access a Collaborate session through Blackboard or from a link sent by email.
Accessing Collaborate through Blackboard
Login to Blackboard, select My Modules and then select the relevant module.
On the menu on the left-hand side select Communication & Tools.
Please note that your tutor may include the Collaborate link in the main side menu.
Then select Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
This will open up the sessions available for this module. To access a session, select on the relevant room. Your tutor will inform you of which session to enter.
Sometimes, your tutor may send an email with a link to a Collaborate session. Select the link from the body of the email. This will automatically open a browser to the session.
Note: This will open up your default browser which may not be supported. You can either copy the link into a supported browser or set a supported browser as your default browser.
Accessing Collaborate through the app
Open the app and enter the session URL and your display name.
Tutors can send session URLs by email or on Blackboard announcements. Please speak to your tutors to find out which communication method they will use.

When accessing Collaborate you must give the browser permission to use audio and video to participate in a session. A notification will appear when you open Collaborate for the first time.
Then, you will be prompted to test your audio and video.
Choose the microphone you want to use. Collaborate tells you that you sound great when it is receiving your audio. Select Yes, it's working to proceed.
Choose the camera you want to use. Collaborate tells you that you look great when it is receiving your video. Select Yes, it's working to proceed.
Note: If you have slow internet speed, turn off the video to increase the quality of the session.
Setup of audio and video is now complete.
You can change the settings once you have entered the session.
Open the Collaborate panel
Select My Settings
Expand the Audio and Video Settings. Here you can change the audio and video settings.

Important notice: When you enter a session, your audio and video will be turned off. To turn these features on, just select each icon.
While in a Collaborate session you can use the Chat to message everyone in the group or an individual.
Open the Collaborate Panel and select the Chat icon.
At the top of the Chat channel, you have the option to either message everyone in the session or search for an individual in the session to message.
View other attendees in the session. Select the Attendees icon to view all attendees.

Tutors may ask you to complete a poll. The poll icon will become available on the control bar. Select the poll icon, the questions will appear on the screen and select from the multiple-choice answers.
Once you have answered the question, the results will be shown.
